“Get Back Up!”
In life, we are faced with many opportunities to build resilience. There will always be Glass half full- half empty assessments. We will go through life feeling a gamut of emotions, but what we implant at the core of who we are will help us with being able to not just live optimistically, but to triumph, even in adversity.
There will always be Life Exams. Moments to either pass or fail. As a little girl, I remember going horse back riding with my Dad. I was excited and yet anxious to ride a horse for the first time. Even with some trepidation, I got on because my Dad was there encouraging me to do it.
As we embarked on the ride, I begin to take in the feeling of accomplishment, as I conquering my fear. In the midst of that, something spooked the horse and he went straight up in the air and I ended up falling off the horse. I was not physically hurt, but my expectation and excitement were gravely injured! All that I built my first horseback riding experience to be was tanked in one unfortunate incident.
My Dad being who he is did not allow me to wallow in what happened to me! As tears streamed and as a profound fear set in- he demanded I get back on the horse. I began to cry uncontrollably and wished that my Mom was there to be an advocate for me in that moment. The people who were also with us tried to talk some reason into him about not pressuring me to get back on, if I did not want to ride anymore. My Dad tuned everyone out. He looked me in the face, beyond the tears streaming and said, “Yes, you will get back on, because I do not want you to be scared of horses.” As much as I loathed that moment of him making me get back on, I would not trade it. In the same day of a fear being developed; a fear was conquered. I got back up on the horse and had such a phenomenal ride for the remainder of the trip. It was like the horse showed me some mercy and went extra slow until I got my nerves up again enjoy the experience.
My Dad had a very unorthodox parenting style. Being the only child, I guess I was his daughter and son. Seriously speaking, I believe he thought he was preparing me for life to always “Get Back Up” no matter what!
Another incident I remember as a child, which is probably why I swim like a fish. My Dad, in his effort to teach me how to swim bypass the introductory period to the water experience and threw me in. It was sink or swim! I think I stop talking to him for at least 24 hours. I would not recommend that type of swimming lesson, but in some interesting ways; it also built an uncanny resolve in me to take a licking from life, but always “Get Back Up!”
Rocky Balboa said, “Nobody is going to hit as hard as life, but it isn’t about how hard you’re hit, it’s about how hard you can get it…and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done. You gotta be willing to take the hits.” There are so many facets to Getting Back Up! We can get up bitter and accusatory. God does not intend for us to go through obstacles and not grow, spiritually-mentally-emotionally. The Fruit of the Spirit is a beautiful bowl of ripe and life nourishing abilities that God gives for us to Get Back Up with the right countenance and resolve. Life does not as much happen to you; as it does happen for you. Life is a Gift from God that perfects us in carrying out His image, here in the earth realm.
Think about all that you have been able to experience- from failures to victories. Assess what they have produced in you. Now, think about what it took for you to Get Back Up. I have the ability to always Get Back Up because of You. Your loving kindness is more than life to me. You have never allowed testing to come my way without equipping me to pass. In moments of failure, it was often because I took my eyes off of you or went in my own strength. I have great need of You and this beautiful reminder is understanding the life that You intended for me. I am forever indebted to You. Thank You for Victory!
